My salvation: The “Dim Sum House” delivers

It is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in the heart of Hamburg: the “Dim Sum Haus”. The institutional Chinese restaurant on Kirchenallee in the St. Georg district has been open every day since 1964.

Now it has had to close indefinitely due to the corona pandemic. "That was very unusual for all of us," says Dennis Kwong, who runs the family business in the third generation. But giving up is not an option.

That is why the “Dim Sum House” has designed a take-away menu from which all Chinese food lovers and regulars can order online or by phone, then pay contactless and pick up their food within 30 minutes – or have it delivered to their home for an additional charge.

The otherwise always very busy and well-attended restaurant, where loyal regulars as well as politicians, celebrities and visitors enjoyed traditional delicacies such as “Dim Sum” (the eponymous dumplings) and original Peking duck, is therefore changing with the Corona-related times.

Dennis Kwong says: "I was reminded of my grandfather's stories. He himself comes from a restaurant family and owned several restaurants in Hong Kong in the middle of the last century. In the 1960s, during the uprisings against the colonial power England, there were curfews so that people were not allowed to leave their homes. His restaurants were losing customers. Ultimately, this led to my grandfather having to give up his businesses. He left his homeland behind and came to Germany. He started a new life here, in this restaurant. The current situation is a bit like a déjà vu of our family history, I just hope this time with a happy ending."

He continues: "Giving up is not an option. We received a lot of letters asking whether we could at least open for takeaway. We then thought about which dishes would be suitable for takeaway and which ones could be reheated at home if necessary. Our central location here at the main train station is of course a great advantage. And what also sets us apart from my grandfather is that today we have the possibilities of the Internet; guests can order and pay online, for example."

Guests can order and pay online and contactless or communicate their wishes over the phone. The food is ready for collection 30 minutes later. Delivery is also possible for an additional charge and for a minimum order value.
