Results of a brand new survey: Allianz Direct wanted to gather information about German drivers’ opinions on electric cars.
The results show that most people are sensible and want to drive in an uncomplicated and problem-free manner.
Electric vehicles are rejected by the majority
➡️ The majority of respondents stated that they would never want to buy an electric car.
➡️ 53% of male and 52% of female respondents refused to buy an electric car.
➡️ Everyone also agreed when looking at the age groups: at least 51% of each group were against buying an electric car.
➡️ 27% of respondents cited costs as a reason against buying an electric vehicle. Close behind are practical reasons such as range and charging time (25%).
52,9% of German drivers cannot imagine buying an electric car instead of a combustion engine car. Even when comparing age groups, hardly any differences were found.
All age groups were more likely to be against electric cars in percentage terms. Only the proportion of rejection among 51-18 year olds was slightly lower than in other groups, at 24%.
However, a clear difference was found in the 65+ age group. A full 57% of respondents rejected electric cars.
Most common reasons against buying an electric car
1. E-vehicles are too expensive. (9,9%)
2. E-cars do not have enough range. (9,8%)
3. Spare parts / repairs are too expensive. (7,0%)
4. An EV would make my electricity bill too expensive. (6,4%)
5. There is no charging station near me. (5,7%)
6. Internal combustion engines offer better performance. (5,5%)
7. Charging an EV takes too long. (4,8%)
8. Can't afford a private charging station at home. (4,0%)
The most frequently cited disadvantage of electric cars was the high purchase costs (9,9% of respondents), closely followed by doubts about sufficient range (9,8%).
In third place was the concern that spare parts and repairs would be too expensive, which prevented 7% of respondents from purchasing.
This was one of four financial reasons cited, making costs the strongest factor overall in the ranking (27%).
Overall, the results make it clear that there is not much enthusiasm for electric cars.
