It started with furtive glances. Then it became secret touches. Today? Today, people caress their smartphones more often than their partners. Welcome to the era of the digital love triangle!
The smartphone – a loyal companion, a walking encyclopedia and a love killer all in one. Just a few years ago it was unimaginable that a small device would have such a profound impact on our interpersonal relationships.
But now we are no longer just in a relationship with our partner – we are in a ménage à trois with iPhone, Android & Co.
Ghosting in your own relationship
It starts harmlessly: a quick look at the WhatsApp message during dinner together. A mindless scroll through Instagram while your partner tells an anecdote from the office.
Suddenly you realise: You have no idea what the other person just said – but hey, at least you know that an influencer in Bali is currently drinking her third smoothie of the day in a bikini. Priorities, right?
Digital Jealousy – the New Drama
“Who is this Lisa who liked your photo?” A question that causes more discussions these days than the classic “Where should we go to eat?”
Likes, story views and online time – the smartphone provides a wealth of information that can cause mistrust, drama and endless discussions. In the past, lipstick marks on the collar were suspicious, today it is blue ticks with no response.

Romance 2.0 – Smartphone as Wingman
But there are also bright spots. Who doesn't know them, the delightful "Thinking of you" messages now and then, the perfect meme that makes your partner laugh, or the lovingly curated Spotify playlist for a road trip together?
When used correctly, the smartphone can enrich a relationship – as long as it works for two people, not between them.
Detox date – worth a try?
Here's a challenge for all couples with a mobile phone affinity: An evening without a smartphone. No scrolling, no typing and no "just quickly googling something". Instead: Real conversations, eye contact and maybe even...
Holding hands? Sounds revolutionary – but it's actually just something that used to be completely normal. Anyone who dares to do it might be surprised at how exciting the person actually is.
Conclusion: Love or reception?
The smartphone is neither good nor bad - it is what we make of it. It can strengthen relationships, but it can also sabotage them. The real art is to use it wisely, so that the most important connection is not the strength of the WiFi, but the one with your partner.
So, honestly: When was the last time you put your smartphone aside and really listened to the person most important to you?
