The exhibition “Città Irreale” in St. Gallen

The exhibition brings together expansive and sculptural works from the holdings of the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen that relate to a social context.

“Città Irreale” is expected to be shown for the first time on the afternoon of February 5, 2021 in the art zone of the Lokremise in St. Gallen.

The architectural modules range from elementary dwellings (Büchel, Masüger) to aspects of global mobility (Gramsma) to the environment made up of objects from the everyday world (Stockholder).

Alex Hanimann's life-size figure ensemble Conversation Piece, which depicts five young people in typical Generation Z poses, as well as Nina Beier's metal pedestal objects from existing equestrian monuments will carry the exhibition out into the public urban space.

The House of Friction (Pumpwerk Heimat) by Christoph Büchel in the adjacent water tower functions as an oppressive and uncomfortable spatial installation that defiantly cites the domestic and homely.

Based on the problems that concern us in times of the pandemic, questions arise about the effects on social coexistence.

In a theatrical audio walk, the works of art become acoustically animated locations and living spaces of imagined citizens of a “Città Irreale”, a city that does not exist but could exist.
