Washing a car in freezing temperatures – is it critical?

Road salt, slush, and road spray take a heavy toll on cars in winter. But when temperatures drop below freezing, a question arises.

Down to minus five degrees is no problem

Light frost between zero and about minus five degrees usually does not pose a major risk – provided the vehicle is properly dried afterwards.

Ideally, a car wash with a drying function or a heated hall should be used where residual moisture can evaporate quickly.

Things get tricky below minus ten degrees.

When the temperature drops to minus ten degrees Celsius or lower, experts advise against washing your car. At these temperatures, water freezes almost instantly, which can damage paint, rubber seals, and plastic parts.

Frozen water in cracks and crevices can also cause doors, fuel filler flaps, or trunks to freeze shut.

Those who don't want to forgo doing laundry in low temperatures should keep a few points in mind:

◉ Choose the right facility: Closed car washes with good drying are significantly better suited than open wash bays where a lot of splash water remains outside.

◉ Dry thoroughly: After washing, wipe seals and door jambs with a cloth. This prevents doors or flaps from freezing shut.

◉ Pay attention to timing: If you do the laundry at a slightly milder moment in the day, you give the remaining water time to drain and evaporate.

Why washing is still worthwhile

Despite all precautions, regular washing in winter isn't a bad idea. Road salt, chemicals, and slush are particularly damaging to the underbody, sills, and wheel arches. This almost inevitably leads to rust in older vehicles.

Regular cleaning removes this aggressive layer and protects the bodywork and chassis better in the long term than leaving the car unwashed for months.

The rule of thumb at a glance

➡️ Down to about minus five degrees: Washing is possible – ideally in a car wash and with careful drying afterwards.

➡️ Between minus five and minus ten degrees: Only in an emergency, and then with extra protection and very thorough drying.

➡️ Colder than minus ten degrees: It's better to wait until a milder period comes along.

By following these simple rules, you can keep your car clean even in winter without taking unnecessary risks.
